Long Weekend

I spent 2 days and 1 night in a cottage near Lake Simcoe in the past long weekend.

It was a relaxing and spiritual enriching trip since I went with a group of people at my age, where we were walking in trials, having chinese dumping dinner, and dancing and singing around a fire place on Saturday.  On Sunday, we went fishing in the morning and wrapped up with a BBQ lunch/dinner.  I also met a number of new friends, where we shared quite a bit of information.

The major draw back was that I got lots of mosquito bits all around my body and they have been keeping me itching up to now!  I guess I asked for it because I refused to use any anti-mosquito agents in those 2 days.

What did I get from this trip?  I got my battery recharged and resolved some of my health issues.  I became a fresh and spiritual person when I came to work today.

Working Lunch

I had the honour to be invited to a wroking lunch by one of my suppliers this afternoon.  We had Thai food in a resturatnt in Keele and Steeles, where my Plant Manager suffered from food poisoning a while ago.

During the conservation, he asked me “What do you like to make a change in your job?”  While I was thinking about those universal problems in every working place in the world, I shared an idea at which I like to change all the people working around me to those who are well trained, willing to take on responsibilities, and willing to work independently to achieve results above and beyond the requirements.  Then, he told me that I will have an enjoyable and successful career in big companies.

After this conversion, I looked for the reasons for my success in each of the leadership positions I had in Toastmasters.  The reason for my achievements was that I surround myself with competent people who were well trained, and exercised their experience to get the job done well.

From this, I know exactly my leadership and working styles.  I know exactly the kind of firms that I should land in order to exercise my talent to make a happy and wealthy career.

Government Reporting

With a behinded work schedule due to constant interruptions, I spent this weekend to finish the Environmental reports, due to both the Federal and Provinical Governments by May 31, 2007, at home.

The governments monitor emissions of harmful substance into the environment from each industry in an annual basis through these reports.  I have to gather the usage of all the material in my facility last year, break them into chemical components and calculate releases.  Then, I have to compare the releases of each component to the requirements specified in the the law and see if I have met the reporting requirements.

This is a very heavy data acquisition exercise, in addition to a lot of different varieties of mass balance calculations.  I enjoyed doing it since I am acting in my real profession, as a Chemical Engineer.

With the amount of enjoyment I found in this exercise, I should consider doing a part time business on the submission of these reports for other companies!

Speak Again!

After being a District level Toastmasters administrator in the past 3 years, I have started to work on speeches again!

I am taking another approach this time – instead of speaking on technical, scientific, and organizational subjects, I am speaking on my personal experience, and developing a good use of body movements, gestures, vocal varieties, rhetorical devices. Also, I like to speak effectively with passion!

Last Wednesday, I talked about my dreams.  The first one was my transition from dreaming to become a Doctor to actually became an Engineer.  The second one was about developing myself as a leader in Toastmasters.  My evaluator told me that I did not have any body movements in the second part of the speech, compared to the first part.  This is sometime that I got to implement in my next speech – good point!

When I was in Grade 12, I wondered what the English teachers were looking for before putting an 80+% in the essay assignments and a level “5″ in LPI.  I came up with the answer to this question when I was writing this speech -  These teachers were looking for mini proses where students share their life experience, their dreams and their favorite past times in a narrative manner with the appropriate use of  rhetorical devices.  I discover this because I wrote my speech on a writing topic in one of the old Grade 12 English Final Examination.

It is so amazing that I am gradually recognizing the expectations of my high school English teachers when I am going through my Toastmasters journey!

So what’s next?  With a good speaking experience from last week, I will consider competing before running for offices again!

It has been 5 years since I installed internet in my house!

As soon as I started surfing the internet, I learned about a new communication tool, which is “BLOG”.  I was very impressed when I was looking at the Blogs of some of my friends!

Anyways, this is just a new beginning.  I’ll try to post a few interesting information in my blog in a regular basis.
